Episode 57: Dreaming of Rest: Why Skipping Rest Days is Bad for You

Listen Now:

Show Notes:

How many times have you thought that if a little of something is good then more must be better?  For example, if a little workout is good then more workouts must be better. Or you overate over the weekend, and so you must punish your body by doing extra workouts. This never works. First of all, you can not ‘out exercise’ a poor diet. Second of all, all bodies need rest days. (And rest periods during exercise sessions.) Third of all, the older we get, the more recovery time we need from our workouts. In Midlife health and fitness may require more rest because recovery time increased as we age.

Are you using exercise frequency as a means of identity? As in your amount of exercise defines you? Be aware of that mindset. Your body does not care what others think, and if you push it without adequate recovery, your health will suffer.

Another type of rest, sleep can also get very little respect. Again this is a harmful mindset. And will result in more stress hormone and potentially more fat storage, in spite of diet.

Listen to this episode and learn how to listen to your body. After all, you have to live in it.
